But I have a question. From a practical stand point, tell me how to discern the difference between conviction and manipulation? I don't mean a Webster definition. I mean what does conviction feel like when you don't want to be convicted? A lot like manipulation I would bet. If someone who has never responded to the gospel feels convicted by what they feel or hear isn't there a danger in joining in with the secular mind set by saying that they were only being manipulated by some fallible minister? I know that the type of altar call you were describing is old and tired. And it may seem very coercive to have a scripted set list with the same song and how to proceed from point A to point B. But if those things are manipulative then so is the act of lowering the lights during worship or having comfortable chairs or making sure the sanctuary smells nice. Creating an atmosphere of worship or of security to allow someone to respond to the Holy Spirit is not manipulation. Every time a fallible human works to spread the gospel there will be the chance of making a mistake in presentation or in just blowing it all together. I think the original author was attempting to implement a stop-gap measure. It may have become over used and out dated, but it was written to be used by one congregation.

Also, I think it is good to look at how we do things and compare them to what God is doing among us now. He does not change but sometimes we have to. Change is not easy but sometimes in concert with the Holy Spirit it is the best thing for individuals and for the body as a whole. However, looking back and tearing down the old foundations does not seem to be a smart way to move forward. (I am not insinuating that was your intent here... stick with me a sec.) Before I was saved one of my biggest points of resistance was that all the "Christians" could not get their stories straight or even get along with each other. All of the discord and rhetoric was not attractive to me and so I stopped trying to find a church at all. Now that I am a little older I see that people don't always have it exactly right but the ones who love God keep trying. If we are friends and want to discuss how we don't agree with the church down the street or the church from 50 years ago around the dinner table that is fine. That is how we learn. But care should be taken when having those discussion outside the brethren as they may breed doubt. If you say something to me that makes me doubt my salvation and I go home and pray and seek God for confirmation and I grow closer to him as a result, then kudos to you. But if I am lost and you say something that makes me think my grandmother (or whoever influenced me for God) was beguiled by a master manipulator and not saved by the Living God what have you accomplished?

Just a few thoughts from the peanut gallery.

I do love the show, though. Very much! Keep 'em coming please!

Jason amd Mandy comments on Faith Today, Episode 5 for September 20, 2011: Stupid Church Signs, Pat Robertson's Fumble, and Get in Shape Girl!

Another good show. For example Harry Potter is bad but Lord of the Rings is not. The Shack is good, but Satanic Verses is bad.

It seems they church has interesting choices in what is right and wrong. Wizards are bad, unless a Christian writes the story.

What is your take?

Samuel comments on Faith Today First Official Episode: The Pope's Amazing Blood, Bible Misconceptions and Sex Questions!

How about that.... now I definitely wish I had had a smartphone back in the day :) Thanks for calling that out.... what can I say....
